First house I lived in, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It’s still there. Painting sketch. Possibly first of a series…
Worsbrough Common was one of the poorest estates at the time in Barnsley. We lived there with my grandparents till I was six. My grandad Arthur a coal miner, who played the cello and loved opera and Paul Robeson. My grandmother Margaret sat me on her knee at the piano and encouraged me to learn to play God Save the Queen (!) (age 3).
