where I lived - A Journey Through Place and Memory
This new project reflects my personal journey across landscapes that shaped my life—growing up on two estates and one leafy road in Barnsley, SouthYorkshire, navigating academic life in the brutalist buildings of the University of East Anglia, and exploring diverse areas of London. I will explore the contrasts between these places and the memories they hold.
As the project evolves, I’m considering expanding the scope to include landscapes from Poland and the Middle East, places that carry their own significance in my story. My hope is that these personal reflections will resonate with others, sparking connections through the shared experience of place, identity, and belonging.
Worsborough C0mmon
First house I lived in, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It’s still there. Painting sketch. Possibly first of a series…
Worsbrough Common was one of the poorest estates at the time in Barnsley. We lived there with my grandparents till I was six. My grandad Arthur a coal miner, who played the cello and loved opera and Paul Robeson. My grandmother Margaret sat me on her knee at the piano and encouraged me to learn to play God Save the Queen (!) (age 3).
